Anahere Nopera
Site Traffic Management Supervisor
Fulton Hogan
I am 25 years old and currently employed by Fulton Hogan Kaitaia. Growing up I was passionate about sports and had always planned to travel later in life. As a teenager I played rugby for teams such as Waiuku Woman’s, Manukau Counties Development, and trialled for Northland Secondary. Initially, I aimed to pursue a career in rugby until I faced setbacks due to two concussions. At the age of 18, I embarked on a journey to Auckland, moving by myself to explore more opportunities in the city. During my three years living and working in Auckland as an interior plasterer, I travelled to Korea, Singapore, and Tonga. However, the impact of COVID-19 significantly affected my employment, and I found myself struggling as a 21-year-old living alone in Auckland. This led me to move back home to Kaitaia. Encouraged by my dad, who works for Fulton Hogan, I applied for a role with the Kaitaia branch. I was successful and began my Fulton Hogan journey in the traffic department, starting with a Stop-Go paddle in the first year. Eager to establish myself in a male-dominated industry, I embraced the challenge to grow and develop professionally with Fulton Hogan. Now in my fifth year with Fulton Hogan, I am responsible for training new employees, as well as managing and completing various tasks in the maintenance department. I have earned my Class 2 license, Road Transport Worker license (RTW), and Class 4 license, enabling me to operate 10-ton tractors with attachments for pavement repairs, 13-ton vibe rollers, and 7-ton skid steers. Working for Fulton Hogan has been a privilege, as the company has supported me in obtaining certifications and expanding my skillset. My role has provided me with the opportunity to travel and enhance my experiences outside of work. I am grateful for the support and grow development that Fulton Hogan has given me over the years, shaping me into the person I am today. I encourage other females to challenge themselves, acknowledge the skills they bring to the industry, and strive for success.

Chrissie Kopae
Driver/Operator
Fulton Hogan
I have always had a passion for big machinery and trucks. When I applied for a position with Fulton Hogan in 2021, I was pessimistic about my chances as I lacked experience. I re-joined Fulton Hogan last year, auditing traffic management sites across Te Tai Tokerau. I love travelling around the region and find it incredibly rewarding to work with our traffic crews on the road. The people here are fantastic, and I would recommend Fulton Hogan to anyone who is willing to work hard and build a fulfilling career from the ground up. I was fortunate to be offered a driver/operator position. This role has provided a foundation for me to advance into other areas within the industry. Currently, I am seven months into operating a grader as part of maintenance grading. This challenging job requires excellent hand-eye coordination and dexterity, which I thoroughly enjoy. I would like to encourage other wahine to take the big step into the roading industry. The opportunities are there, and the rewards going forward are immense. Thank you for allowing me to share my journey. I hope my experience can inspire more women to consider careers in the roading and construction industry.

Emily Hoori
Site Traffic Management Supervisor
Fulton Hogan
I am a proud mum of three and a loving nan to three mokos. My professional journey began as a sewist and bar manager until 2016, when I ventured into the roading industry. I started as a Traffic Controller for a small subcontracting company in Whangarei working with Fulton Hogan. In 2018, I joined Fulton Hogan directly, working in the Whangarei District Council Maintenance department as a Traffic Controller for about two years. During this period, my supervisor provided invaluable support, helping me gain more experience and knowledge in Traffic Management. With dedication and hard work, I transitioned into Fulton Hogan's Traffic Management department. Thanks to the support of my Traffic Management Supervisor, I obtained my Class 2 license and STMS (Site Traffic Management Supervisor) certification. Over my seven-year tenure at Fulton Hogan, I've managed Traffic Management crews, completed the Connector and Assist training programmes provided by Mates in Construction (suicide prevention training for the building and construction industry), and assisted as the Worker Union Secretary. I truly enjoy my role at Fulton Hogan because every day presents new challenges and opportunities. Our team's motto is, "We listen, we don’t judge, we encourage."

Estella Patu
Operator/Labourer
Fulton Hogan
I am 23 years old and from Whangarei, Northland. My passions include hunting, fishing, motorbike riding, anything that involves the great outdoors. I have been fortunate enough to join Fulton Hogan as a cadet, beginning my cadetship in October 2023. The cadetship involves rotating through each department within the business for roughly two months. Out of the seven departments available, I completed four rotations before finding my ideal department, Contracting. This cadetship has allowed me to gain hands-on experience in various departments and work alongside many crews, offering me a clearer idea of my chosen career pathway. One of the aspects I enjoy the most is travelling across Northland and experiencing some spectacular views while on the job. When considering Fulton Hogan, I factored in my interests in outdoor activities and my longstanding curiosity about the trades during school. Unsure of what specific path to take, I opted for a company that offers numerous opportunities and allows me to learn from experienced professionals in their fields. While I'm still figuring out my exact career path, I am gaining valuable licences and skills along the way. Currently, I operate diggers, loaders, and rollers in the Contracting department, and I'm also studying Level 3 Civil Works through Connexis. Fulton Hogan is assisting my career development by providing opportunities to learn new skills and gain practical experience.

Kiana Werhan
Driver/Operator
Fulton Hogan
At sixteen, I left Whangarei Girls High School to work as a roofer full-time while completing my NCEA Level 2 online with Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu. After two years in roofing, I realised that my passion for the trade stemmed more from the people I was working with than from a love for the trade itself. Recognising that roofing was not something I wanted to pursue long-term I began exploring other career pathways within the trades to find what truly interested me. When the opportunity to apply for a cadetship with Fulton Hogan arose, I saw it as the perfect chance to try something new. Before my interview, I had no idea what Fulton Hogan did and had little interest in the roading industry. However, after researching the opportunities they offered and the variety of work they performed, I decided to give it a shot. As a cadet, I had the chance to experience different departments within Fulton Hogan, including NOC, WDC, Traffic Management, Sealing, Contracting, and the on-site Workshop, spending roughly two months in each department with a minimum rotation of three. After completing rotations in NOC and the Workshop, I chose Contracting as my third department. In my role within Contracting, I drive Class 2 trucks and operate diggers, loaders, and rollers, as well as contribute as a labourer on the ground. Since joining the Contracting department, I have gained valuable skills and experience as both a labourer and operator. I have been fortunate enough to further my skills by completing a Level 3 Civil Infrastructure Works course through Connexis and am currently advancing my studies with the Level 4 Civil Infrastructure Works course to achieve my Civil Tradesmanship. Fulton Hogan has supported my development by providing licences and opportunities to enhance my experience and skill set in my current career path.

Lateisha Jeeves
Northland Health and Safety Advisor
Fulton Hogan
I left school quite young without a clear direction of what I wanted to do. Initially I studied hair dressing through people potential and then went on to work in a salon in Whangarei. It wasn’t long before I realised, I didn’t enjoy been couped up inside all day & went on to try my hand at a few other things. It wasn’t until 2017 still unsure where I was heading in life. I applied for a job at a small company in Whangarei that subcontracted to Fulton Hogan, amongst traffic management (holding a ‘slow down paddle’) and occasionally stopping traffic I also completed tasks such as labourer, sweeping, shovelling & learning how to use small engine powered tools. This was my space, the construction industry! In 2018 my journey being employed directly by Fulton Hogan began, I was employed in the WDC maintenance department where I worked my way from TC to STMS and into an Inspector role - drainage inspections & unsealed/sealed road inspections, programming faults on the network for the team to repair. Later I moved from the WDC maintenance department to the NOC Contract where I was employed to inspect all vulnerable flooding areas and assets (guardrails, bridges & retaining walls) on the State Highway network. This included supervising subcontractors undertaking pavement repairs and repairs to our assets. I have always had a passion for the environment & the well-being & safety of my peers. In the beginning of 2023, I had the opportunity to step into the Northland H&S Advisor role in the SQTE department, working in a small tightknit team based in Whangarei doing something that has always interested me, a job that I love! I have since completed my H&S level 4 Cert and I am about to begin my diploma in H&S. In my 6.5 years with FH, I have gained an abundance of knowledge and skills in different aspects of both the business and the industry. Fulton Hogan has given me the opportunity to progress through different roles and has supported me every step of the way!

Oshean Ashby
Class 4L Driver Operator/Labourer
Fulton Hogan
I lead an active lifestyle both in and out of work. Fitness is an essential part of my life, and I prioritise this by participating in CrossFit and Bodybuilding before and after my mahi. Being active and staying fit plays a crucial role in my lifestyle as it helps me stay focused and healthy both at work and outside of it. I was introduced to Fulton Hogan through AWF (a labour hire agency) and was sub-contracted to the Whangarei District Council Maintenance Department for over six months. When the sub-contract ended, I was offered a full-time role with Fulton Hogan as a Class 4L Driver/Labourer, a position I have held for just over a year. I thoroughly enjoy my work and am keen to develop my skills, experience, and qualifications. My goal is to embark on new and exciting challenges with diverse projects to gain industry experience and skills, starting by learning to drive a six-wheeler truck. I intend to achieve this by spending time with and being trained by the experienced and knowledgeable drivers at Fulton Hogan. Upon gaining these skills and knowledge, my goal is to help upskill new and existing team members and encourage them to make the most of the opportunities available at Fulton Hogan.

Pania Leef
Project Manager (Contracting)
Fulton Hogan
I left school in 2010 and started out studying mechanical engineering – which I quickly realised wasn’t for me and so went dairy farming. My love for being outdoors and doing different tasks eventually led me to taking a chance with Asset Construction as a labourer in 2018. Today I am really happy I took that chance and tried something I had no knowledge about. After trying out operating machinery and drain laying I was then offered an opportunity with Downer as a driver/operator, while also studying to gain engineering qualifications. A year later I became Assistant Engineer for Downer’s construction division. In 2023 I joined Fulton Hogan as Project Engineer, moving to my current role of Project Manager at the end of that year. I’m still studying remotely and will obtain my Bachelor of Engineering Technology. I sometimes can’t believe it’s only been 7 years since I joined the industry with very little knowledge, the opportunities to learn and grow in construction are endless. To this day, I am still excited about working with big machines and delivering huge projects for our communities. The people in our industry and very welcoming and are happy to give young crew a chance to try their hand at almost anything. Fulton Hogan cover the cost of a wide range of training and qualifications and look after our whanau with insurance cover, extra Kiwisaver contributions and support wherever it’s needed. My team are awesome, I feel happy coming to work every day not only because we build cool stuff, but because the people I get to do it with look out for me and I look out for them. I know I’m where I’m supposed to be.

Pauline Bavière
Site Engineer
Fulton Hogan
Born in France, I pursued both high school and university studies simultaneously, achieving an equivalent of a New Zealand Bachelor of Mathematics and Physics. I then moved near Paris to further my education and, by 21, graduated with a Master of Civil Engineering (Level 9). My career began with HEB in northern France as a site engineer on a large 9-level concrete building project involving 200 people. As the only woman on-site, I realised that the company's values did not align with mine, and the experience was challenging. Seeking something different, I decided to delve into seismic engineering. I chose New Zealand over Japan for its esteemed universities and my love for the outdoors. Additionally, learning English seemed more feasible than Japanese. In February 2023, I relocated to Christchurch to pursue a Master of Architectural Engineering, specialising in designing and repairing buildings affected by natural catastrophes. This period was tough as I had to rapidly improve my English while coping with demanding studies. Post-graduation, I opted to remain in New Zealand, determined to find a company that valued inclusiveness. I relocated to Whangarei and joined Fulton Hogan as a Site Engineer at the end of 2023. At Fulton Hogan, I appreciate the respectful, family-oriented environment, and enjoy splitting my time between the site and the office. My role involves managing various projects, from retaining walls to pavement rehabilitation in Northland, ensuring quality and safety on-site, and collaborating closely with a Project Manager and Supervisor. Fulton Hogan has provided a platform for my growth and accountability. The once shy woman, I have evolved into a confident professional, adept at managing projects independently and leading a team effectively. Driven by my passion for engineering, I am committed to contributing to the development of New Zealand’s infrastructure.

Rachel Hannah
Talent Acquisition Lead - Upper North Island
Fulton Hogan
With a strong background in recruitment across multiple industries, I’ve found my true passion in talent acquisition at Fulton Hogan, particularly in the roading and infrastructure sector. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping people find purpose through meaningful careers. I especially love encouraging wahine to explore the possibilities this industry offers. No two days are the same, and I’m constantly inspired by the people I meet and the communities we help build. Being part of a team that shapes the future of Aotearoa through opportunity and connection is something I’m genuinely proud of. Upon returning home, I ventured into various roles, including welding, store management, and truck driving. Seeking a drastic change, I entered the film industry, where I advanced to Onset Manager, Special Effects, and Make-up Artist. During this period, I also earned my passenger license, enabling me to drive coaches. Following my stint in the film industry, I worked for the Department of Corrections before joining Fulton Hogan. Initially, I was part of the Roading team, then transitioned to the Traffic Department, and eventually moved to Sealing Construction projects. My journey at Fulton Hogan has been enriching, allowing me to acquire new skills and diverse experiences across the company. It's encouraging to witness more women becoming part of the Fulton Hogan family. Before I retire my steel cap boots, I aspire to see even more wāhine seize the opportunities here. Take the leap and join our team, the achievements you can reach at Fulton Hogan are extraordinary, and I promise you won't regret it.

Rachel Taylor
Traffic Management Assurance and Competency Lead
Fulton Hogan
Growing up, my family faced financial challenges. My father was a truck driver, and we were eight kids living in a four-bedroom house. As a child, I didn't have much direction regarding my future career, so I started working as an office worker. During my teens, my dad often negotiated contracts with Fulton Hogan, and he spoke highly of the company. When my youngest son turned four and I was ready to return to work, I saw a local job with Fulton Hogan advertised and began working as a Contract Administrator in Silverdale, Auckland. I was determined to break the stereotype of a young Māori solo mum on benefits and wanted my children to see me working hard to get ahead in life. After four years, having mastered the admin job, I expressed my desire for a new challenge to my manager, who then created a Regional Customer Manager role for me. In this role, I worked with Contract Administrators across Auckland to develop a regional customer approach aligned with Auckland Transport systems. A few years later, I transitioned to a traffic management design role, which paved the way for a rewarding career in traffic management. In 2015, I transferred from Auckland to Fulton Hogan in Tauranga, where I completed ten years of service. This experience showcased the beauty of Fulton Hogan, with its diverse job opportunities, various locations, connections, and a strong whanau-oriented culture. I left Fulton Hogan in 2017, and thanks to the connections I had made, I was offered a role as a Traffic Management Auditor with the local Councils. I worked my way up at Tauranga City Council, first as a Corridor Access Manager and then as a Team Leader. In 2021, I moved to Whangārei and became Team Leader for the Traffic team of the Northland Councils. During this period, I also served as the North Island Council Representative for the National Industry Steering Group, collaborating with industry leaders to drive changes in traffic management across the country. I rejoined Fulton Hogan last year, auditing traffic management sites across Te Tai Tokerau. I love traveling around the region and find it incredibly rewarding to work with our traffic crews on the road. The people here are fantastic, and I would recommend Fulton Hogan to anyone who is willing to work hard and build a fulfilling career from the ground up.

Hi I’m Ciara O’Halloran, I’m 22 years old. I started gaining an interest for this industry when I attended my first Girls in Infrastructure event day. One year later I started my electrical apprenticeship. Completing this will open many doors for job opportunities in the future, and I will always have a trade to fall back on if it was ever needed.

Emma Johnstone
Electrical Apprentice
Golden Bay Cement
Hi my names Emma Johnstone, I'm 19 years of age. Tauraroa Area School was the school I attended for my schooling. This is where I had a lot of openings into the trade industries through a gateway programme. I gained a lot of skill and insight into electrical from doing a work placement. Since doing the work placement I found a high interest into doing an electrical apprenticeship. I finished school and got straight into my apprenticeship here at Golden Bay in Portland. I'm now halfway through my second year of my apprenticeship.

Gabby O'Callaghan

Golden Bay Cement
I initially went to university to study to be a vet, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I changed degrees a couple times before landing on chemical engineering. After Uni, Fletcher Building offered me a role in the graduate program at Golden Bay working at the cement manufacturing plant. My time at Golden Bay has been interesting with no two days looking the same. I have enjoyed the variety of work and challenges the role offers me.

Alyssa Laing
Graduate Engineer
Northpower
My pathway into the electrical industry began in 2019 at People Potential, where I completed the Northpower Trade Cadet Programme and achieved my Level 2 New Zealand Certificate in Electricity Supply. That experience laid the foundation for what has become a rewarding and dynamic career. Originally from Melbourne, I completed my secondary education at McClelland Secondary College before moving to New Zealand to further my studies. While working as a cadet with Northpower, I applied for and received a scholarship to study at the Manukau Institute of Technology, where I completed my Diploma of Electrical Engineering. Now, I’m proud to be working as a Design Engineer at Northpower. In this role, I support project design, implementation, and validation—using specialised software to develop technical solutions that meet the needs of our growing infrastructure. Every project gives me the opportunity to apply and expand my skills while contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of electricity across our communities. I’m passionate about innovation and continuous learning. If you’re excited about bringing forward new ideas and making a real impact, come join me in shaping the future of our ever-evolving electrical industry.

Eseta Tonutonu
Glove and Line Mechanic
Northpower
From the age of 11, I knew exactly what I wanted to be—a Line Mechanic. I told my family, and from that moment on, I stayed focused on achieving that dream. Today, I’m proud to be part of the Northpower crew in Whangārei, working hands-on to maintain and repair our electrical network. I was raised on the humble and beautiful island of Haʻapai in Tonga. I attended Haʻapai High School and later studied Electrical Engineering at the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology for three years. That education led me to my first role in the industry as a Trainee Line Mechanic with Tonga Power Ltd. In 2012, Northpower recruited ten people from Tonga Power Ltd. I was the only woman selected for the program. A decade later, in 2022, I became the second female Glove and Barrier Line Mechanic at Northpower—finally doing the job I had dreamed about since I was a child. Working in the field is a lot like the weather—it can change in an instant. But that’s part of the excitement. Every day presents a new challenge, and every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve faced many obstacles in my journey, but with determination and hard work, I’ve always found ways to adapt and thrive. One of my proudest moments was when my boss in Tonga said, “I need 10 Eseta’s on my team.” He went on to recruit 10 more women from my island and beyond. That decision made a lasting impact, showing the power of representation and belief in women’s capabilities in trades. To all wāhine considering a new career path: take the leap. The work is rewarding, empowering, and full of purpose. If I can do it, so can you—and I promise, you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Hayley McRae
Trainee Electrical Fitter
Northpower
My journey with Northpower began while I was still a Year 13 student at Whangārei Girls’ High School. I was part of the school’s Gateway programme and had always been drawn to the electrotechnology field. After attending the Girls in Infrastructure event, I connected with Northpower and reached out for the opportunity to do work experience near the end of 2022. That experience gave me a real insight into the industry and confirmed that this was the career path I wanted to follow. I spent time working with the Northpower Electrical Services team, and from there, I was lucky enough to be accepted into the first intake of Northpower’s cadetship programme in 2023. I’m now on the Electrical Trade pathway as a Trainee Electrical Fitter, and I’m excited to keep learning and building my skills. Being part of the cadetship has opened so many doors for me, and I’m proud to be a young woman pursuing a future in the trades.

Mystee Opai
Cable Jointer
Northpower
I joined Northpower in 2020 through a cadetship programme with People Potential. The programme was designed to give young people from the community the chance to explore different areas of the business and gain experience across the electricity industry. It was the perfect opportunity for me to learn, grow, and figure out where I wanted to take my career. During my time as a cadet, I worked in several parts of the Northpower Contracting business—including the faults dispatch team, out in the field with faults and vegetation crews, and even in the stores department. Each role gave me a better understanding of how the industry works and helped me discover where my passion truly lies. At the end of the cadetship, I was offered a position as a Trainee Cable Jointer with Northland Contracting. I joined an underground crew and began my trade training under the guidance of an experienced foreperson. It was a big step, but I was ready for the challenge. I’ve always wanted to get into a trade, and becoming a Cable Jointer was especially meaningful to me—my dad worked for Northpower as a Line Mechanic, and I’ve always looked up to him. Following in his footsteps while carving out my own path has been really rewarding. In 2023, after a lot of hard work and dedication, I completed my Level 4 Cable Jointing Qualification. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Brandy Alger
PhD Student in Humanitarian Engineering
University of Canterbury
I'm an engineer and current PhD student at the University of Canterbury researching how we can better prepare communities for natural hazards. I’ve always loved maths and science, which led me to study electrical engineering—but I also love working with people. That passion drew me into disaster preparedness and response, including volunteering with the New Zealand Red Cross. Now, I combine technical knowledge with community focus. I’ve met many women like me who are drawn to engineering but also want to make a real difference for people. I’d love to see more engineers designing solutions that put communities at the heart of what we do.

Paris Rewiri
Quality Assurance Officer
Ventia
I’m 23 years old and started working at Ventia when I was 18, straight out of Opononi Area School. I had already completed all my NCEA before finishing school and originally wanted to become a police officer. But I needed money to do the courses, so when I saw a traffic control job advertised-no qualifications needed-I jumped at the chance. That’s where my journey began. Since then, I’ve done a bit of everything: traffic control, pothole repairs, vegetation trimming, even tried drain laying and concrete work (which I didn’t enjoy). I eventually found my passion in sealing and bitumen work. I became a roller driver, then a chip runner, and now I work as a QA (Quality Assurance) officer. I check spread rates, make sure the right materials are used, take notes and photos for clients, and help lead the team when decisions need to be made. What I love most about my role are the friendships, the knowledge, and the opportunities I’ve gained. I’ve worked with people my age and others three times older, and many of them still keep in touch. My advice? There’s more than one path to success. Keep trying until you find what you genuinely love to do.

But through hard work, resilience, and support from the right people, I’ve built a career I’m proud of and a future for my daughter. What do I love most about working at Ventia? It’s the people. The everyday legends on the ground who show up, get stuck in, and make great things happen. My journey is proof that there’s no one-size-fits-all path to success. With determination and the right opportunities, a rewarding career in infrastructure is absolutely possible. I’m proud to be part of Ventia and we’re always looking for more passionate people to join us.

Anneliese Sabrowski
Project Manager
Stellar Projects
I went to Glenfield College in Auckland and then did a Diploma in Engineering (Civil) and a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) at Unitec. I worked for Fulton Hogan while I was at uni and continued with them once I graduated. I also did a Masters of Engineering Studies (Transportation) part time at Auckland University while I was working full time. I worked at Fulton Hogan for 10 years doing construction and motorway maintenance. I now work for Stellar Projects as a Project Management Consultant managing construction projects on behalf of councils and Waka Kotahi which I am really enjoying. There are a lot of ways to get to the same place. If uni, or a bachelor’s degree doesn’t feel like you that’s ok, you can work at your own pace, in a way that works for you, and still get to where you want to go :)

I have a strong background in project administration, with experience across many areas of the construction industry. My career began in London with a major fit-out company and an architecture firm working on high-end projects. After taking seven years off to raise my children, Keira and Zain, I returned to work in 2014 as a project administrator for a local project management company. Since then, I’ve worked on a range of projects across Te Tai Tokerau Northland, including the Salvation Army Redevelopment, Te Ora Hou Community Facility, Mokau Marae Rebuild, Kaipara Service Centre, and Lindvart Park in Kaikohe. I started out with no clear direction, working at McDonald’s before eventually landing an entry-level office job. That experience opened doors in London’s construction sector, where I worked as a site secretary and office manager. Although I don’t have formal qualifications, my determination and willingness to learn led me to my current role as Assistant Project Manager at Beca, where I’m excited to keep growing my career. Girls in Infrastructure is an inspiring initiative—I wish it existed when I was at school. I hope the young women attending feel empowered to explore careers in this industry.

Olivia Braiser
Concrete Batcher and Tester

Growing up in Masterton, I knew from age eleven that I wanted to be a truck driver. However, after finishing high school, I spent three years trying to enter the industry, finding that companies were often unwilling to provide the necessary training despite needing drivers. Fortunately, I discovered an advertisement for a concrete company in Masterton that was willing to invest the time and effort to train me to obtain my Class 4 license. This company was formerly known as AML Masterton, a joint venture between Holcim and another company. In 2023, when my plant transitioned to Holcim ReadyMix Masterton, I moved from driving trucks to an office-based role. Initially, my responsibilities were as a Batcher & Tester, but I have since expanded my skills to include ordering, financials, customer relations and learning more about business operations. In my five years here, I have not only achieved my initial goal of becoming a truck driver but have also discovered new roles that I enjoy. I see numerous possibilities for furthering my career and continuing to develop my skill set.

Alice Loretto
Laboratory Technician
Fulton Hogan
In 2023, I graduated from the University of Auckland holding a Bachelor of Science. My preferred subjects in high school were physics, chemistry and statistics. It was a natural pathway for me move into a combined role related to testing and data analytics. I started my role as a Laboratory Technician right out of Uni in 2024 with no experience but was given the opportunity to develop my skills and learn about testing aggregates and asphalt in a Civil Infrastructure company. I really enjoy what I do, it’s hands on, allowing me to investigate, test and review trends and patterns of my testing which challenges my thinking on the how’s and whys. Working the laboratory requires no experience and all can be taught on the job, I think it’s worth giving this role a go!

Tabitha Mataroa

In my role as a Specialist Operator, I get to drive and operate a range of heavy plant machinery across various sized civil construction projects. I’ve been in the civil construction industry for 4 years, working closely within a Paving Surfacing Department. It worked out nicely being in my role as I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors and being hands on. It was a no brainer to pivot my career into the construction sector. I work with a supportive crew, and they have all helped me along my career in developing my skills including building confidence in being brave towards pushing the limits within my progression. Be like me, follow your gut and just give it a go!

My favourite part of the role is being able to have good banter with the mix of different crews. It doesn’t matter which site I work on; everyone treats me with respect and is open to having a good laugh. This makes it easy for me to want to roll out of bed each day. “It’s a rewarding career being able to protect the public and have fun at the same time”.

Tayla-Paige Hura
Leading Hand, All Rounder
Fulton Hogan
I’ve been in the Civil Construction Sector for 3.5 years, it all started after some encouragement by a family friend recommending me to try out construction. Initially hesitant, but I ended up taking a leap of faith to join as a General Labourer and have never looked back. Starting with no licence or civil construction experience, I earned my Class 2 licence with WTR endorsement. Along with gaining further skills along the way, I am proudly able to say I am able to operate a range of machinery such as excavators, diggers, rollers, and dump trucks. If there was one thing, I could say to myself back then when I was unsure to join the industry, it would be “Don’t be afraid of opportunities”.

Kirsty McVicar

Maxine Conaglen
Civil Engineering Student
Fulton Hogan
Maxine Conaglen is in her final semester of a Civil Engineering diploma, which she’s been studying part-time while working for Fulton Hogan. She grew up on a family farm near Bombay and developed an early interest in problem-solving, engineering, and building things, despite not excelling in calculus and physics. After high school, she began civil engineering studies but questioned her path until gaining practical experience as a summer cadet with Fulton Hogan. Working on-site, especially on an underground pump station, helped her discover her passion for hands-on engineering work. Preferring fieldwork over office-based roles, she shifted to a more practical diploma program. Now nearly finished, she encourages others—especially those who may doubt themselves—that there’s a place for everyone in the industry.

After high school, I attended University of Auckland and graduated with a bachelor's degree double majoring in Psychology and Exercise Science. I worked in logistics and customer service, learning and development and now in Recruitment which aligns closely with my Psychology background. Alice started her career with a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Zoology at Otago University, before receiving a Masters of Resource and Environmental planning at Massey University. Alice decided to put her qualifications to practice in infrastructure. She quickly learned to appreciate the industry for giving her the chance to work outdoors, learn on the job, and ‘get her boots dirty’. She says it’s a great industry for anyone who’s a good problem solver. “If you like getting stuck in, then it’s a great role for you.” She wants young women to know it’s way more than just building roads or putting pipes in the ground - there’s a lot going on in the background. “You might drive past a crew and think it’s not for you, but there are really diverse work opportunities available. Keep an open mind”

Tini King-Kelly

Since I began, I’ve challenged myself to grow my career, and Higgins has helped me to get where I want to be, every time.” Tini is aiming to step into a leadership role in the near future. Her advice to young women joining the industry is to back themselves. “Have confidence in the direction you’ve chosen and always listen to the advice you’re given. You’ll be surprised at what you can do when you give yourself the opportunity to step into infrastructure.”

Tiara-Awhina Pepere
Concrete Construction Apprentice
Fletchers Construction
Tiari-Awhina joined BPC through a Pukana Internship, which is a scheme that helps Māori jobseekers find roles in the Wellington Region.
